Everton beat Everton on historic night at Goodison Park

Goals from Jermaine Beckford and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov secured a 2-0 victory for Everton against their Chilean counterparts on a momentous occasion for both clubs at Goodison Park last night.

It was the first time Everton and Everton de Viña del Mar had played each other in 111 years despite the incredible link between the two clubs.

Everton de Viña del Mar were formed in 1909 by David Foxley following Everton’s tour of Chile.

Originally named ‘Everton Football Club’, the inaugural team was composed entirely of British immigrants before they were renamed in 1950.

Since their establishment they have triumphed in four Chilean championships and are the sixth most successful club in the South American country.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright paid testament to the historical importance of the special friendly in his programme notes.

“I would imagine that from the day Mr David Foxley founded tonight’s opponents in 1909 there has been a hope that one day the Chilean and English Everton Football Clubs would play against each other,” said Kenwright.

He added: “There may be more than 6,000 miles between us, but a real kindred spirit and friendship has been firmly established between our two football clubs.

“It’s an historic occasion for the two Evertons. It is the first time a Chilean club side has been invited at club level to play in Europe and we are proud to be the first to do that.”
