Everton can still finish in top four, insists Roberto Martinez
Everton manager Roberto Martinez is optimistic that his Toffees side can still qualify for the Champions League this season
Roberto Martinez believes Everton can still qualify for the Champions League this season.
The Toffees have fallen off the pace in the hunt for a top-four finish after a demoralising 4-0 loss to rivals Liverpool at Anfield in January.
Mathematically we can. It’s still achievable
Martinez’s men are nine points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City, who have played two games less than the Merseyside outfit.
However, the Toffees manager is remaining optimistic about their chances and wants to be planning for a season in Europe this coming summer.
“We’re really excited about the league,” said Martinez.
“We’ve been working for nine months to be as good as we can over the last 11 games. We have 48 points and at this stage that’s a good return.
“This is a very intense period and we were disappointed to leave the FA Cup. Can we get top four? Mathematically we can. It’s still achievable.
“There are many aspects that will affect that. Then you have Europa league qualification which is another thing to aim and fight for.
“It would be easy to say we don’t want to qualify for Europe and let the season cruise through but that’s not the case at all.
“Reaching Europe would be a massive step forward, it would bring the massive nights we want that helps us grow as a club.
“You want to be planning a campaign that includes Europe, for all it’s extra demands. Can we get into Europe? We will fight with everything we have to do that.”
