Gareth Barry insists he has fond memories of his “four fantastic years” at Manchester City after sealing a season-long loan move to Everton.

The 32-year-old was out-of-favour under new manager Manuel Pellegrini following the arrival of summer signings Fernandinho and Stevan Jovetic, as well as the presence of James Milner, Yaya Toure and Javi Garcia.

Despite his subdued Citizens exit as he sealed his Toffees move minutes before Monday’s deadline, Barry insisted he was grateful to City for their part in his loan switch to Goodison Park.

“I’m grateful for four fantastic years at Manchester City,” Barry said.

“I went there to try to win trophies and I was lucky enough to win a couple. I have only good things to say about the club.”

He added: “When you get into that last hour and there are still a few snags between the two clubs you do fear the worst and start thinking you might be going into training with Manchester City tomorrow.

“I am grateful it all went through. I was desperate in the end to join Everton – the chance to join this great club with its history and more chance to play regular football.”

Barry has not been called up to Roy Hodgson’s squad for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine at Wembley.

And the former Aston Villa captian is focusing on Everton for the time being – and not on his future with the Three Lions.

“It’s something that it’s in the background at the minute really,” he added.

“I’ve not been involved in an England squad for a year now, so my initial targets are to play well for Everton.

“It would be a big bonus if an England call came on the back of it – that would be a bonus for Everton too because it would mean we would be playing well.”
