Andrei Kanchelskis is backing Everton to secure a positive result against Liverpool FC in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Reds will take on the Toffees fresh from their 3-0 win over Premier League leaders Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Liverpool FC lost Mohamed Salah to an injury problem in the second half after the 25-year-old scored his 38th goal of the 2017-18 season in all competitions following his move from AS Roma last summer.

The Merseyside outfit were also without Cameroon defender Joel Matip, England international Joe Gomez and Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan for the Champions League clash due to an injury problem.

Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp could be tempted to protect his key players for the Merseyside derby ahead of the return leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash next Tuesday.

Former Everton star Kanchelskis is optimistic that the Champions League could distract Liverpool FC and give the Toffees the upper hand.

“It’s an important game at Goodison Park for the fans so I hope so,” Kanchelskis told BetStars.

“I think Everton have a very good chance because Liverpool are concentrating more on the Champions League, especially playing on Wednesday against Man City. It’s a good chance for Everton. I know how much it means to the fans when Everton win against Liverpool.

“Liverpool are a good team, they play very good football. It’s a derby, it’s a special game and different to any other game. I hope for the fans that Everton can get something out of the game.”

Liverpool FC signed Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in a £75m deal from Southampton in the January transfer window.

The Dutch centre-half scored on his debut with a late header in a 2-1 victory over Everton.
