Ferdinand heaps praise on Liverpool duo Sterling and Sturridge

Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge after the Liverpool pair impressed in England’s 2-1 loss to Italy in their World Cup opener.

19-year-old Sterling played a part in Sturridge’s equaliser as the Liverpool striker thumped a finish past Salvatore Sirigu following Wayne Rooney’s cross in the 39th minute.

However, Mario Balotelli restored Italy’s lead early in the second half after Claudio Marchisio’s opener, with Sterling unable to conjure a leveller despite his best efforts.

And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand, who earned 81 England caps during a 14-year Three Lions career, took to Twitter to give his thoughts on the Group D defeat.

“Sterling was direct & played a part in Sturridge goal, put 1 great cross across the face of goal, almost scored in 1st minute….a threat,” Ferdinand said on Twitter.

“Welbeck was everywhere, 1 great run & cross where we almost scored, retrieved & kept the ball well. defenders hate playing against him.

“Sturridge, lovely goal, grew into the game, brought others into play well at times, when in the box very direct & unlucky with the curler.

“Rooney put the ball on a plate for Sturridge goal with a great cross, put in a shift but didn’t see as much of the ball as he would’ve liked.

“Barkley, exciting, direct, ran at people, no fear, looked at home out there…

“Lallana didn’t get long but possesses great balance, plays off both feet, hard to read & drew a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions.”
