I wasn’t concerned by dip in form, insists Fernando Torres

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres insists he never doubted his own ability despite enduring a difficult start to the season.

Torres had struggled to find form with the Anfield outfit after a torrid summer at the World Cup in South Africa.

The former Atletico Madrid striker underwent surgery on a groin problem at the end of last season while also being hampered by a knee complaint.

But the 26-year-old, who scored both of Liverpool’s goals in their 2-0 victory over league-leaders Chelsea on Sunday, says he was not concerned by his dip in form.

“The confidence has never been a problem,” he said. “But we all needed time to play well with new players and a new manager and new ideas.”

Torres has now scored seven goals against Chelsea in all competitions with Sunday’s brace at Anfield taking his tally to four league goals this season for the Reds.

And the World Cup winner is confident Roy Hodgson’s men can build on their run of three successive victories.

“We knew before the game if we beat them we would get more confidence but the three points is the best thing,” he continued.

“We are improving and this kind of result gives us more confidence, we are going forward in the table and are quite happy about that.

“The team is playing well and when the team is playing well the players will play better, so it is good for everyone.

“This is a tough week with two games in five days so we have to forget this game and start thinking about Wigan (on Wednesday) and Stoke.”
