Lampard: No regrets if Chelsea don’t win Champions League

Frank Lampard admits that winning the Champions League would cap a great career at Chelsea – but insists there will be “no regrets” should the Blues fail to beat Bayern Munich in Saturday’s final.

The 33-year-old has won three Premier League titles and collected four FA Cup winners’ medals since moving to Chelsea in a £11m deal from West Ham United in 2001.

The England international was part of the Blues side beaten by Manchester United on penalties in the Champions League final in Moscow in 2008 – but the midfielder insists he will be happy with his Chelsea medal haul even if it does not include Europe’s top prize.

“It would [winning the Champions League complete a great career],” said Lampard. “Even if we don’t win it I’d have no regrets looking back at my playing career here.

“I’ve been lucky to play for the club and won a lot of things. But it would be big. I can’t hide away from that.”

Lampard acknowledges that Chelsea’s failure to finish in the top four has heaped even more significance on their showdown with Bayern.

Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over the Blues at Anfield last week ended the Londoners’ hopes of masterminding a late comeback in the race for a fourth-place finish.

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur both won on the final day of the Premier League to leave Chelsea in sixth, meaning the Stamford Bridge outfit must win in Germany to secure their place in next season’s Champions League.

“It’s a sideshow [needing to win to be in next season’s Champions League],” added Lampard.

“It’s in the back of our minds. It certainly doesn’t become the overall issue.

“I think the game itself on the day is the first thought. But obviously it becomes more prominent now we’re out of the top four.”
