However, the Blues have struggled on the road this season, losing twice away from west London, and Lampard admits they need to beat sides like their Wednesday night opponent’s Sunderland.
“We’re in contention. I think to be title contenders we have to put together a long run of wins – only Arsenal have done that so far,” Lampard told Sky Sports News.
“We’re striving for that but our away form hasn’t been up to standard although our last away game was a great performance at West Ham.
“We need to carry on where we’ve been in the last couple of league games.”
Despite feeling Chelsea need to improve their away from, Blues midfielder Lampard doesn’t believes the Black Cats clash is must-win.
“I think it’s too early for that. I think this season has opened up slightly different to other seasons.
“I think we’ve lost more games than we’d want to lose at this stage. We’ve got our eye on the bigger picture, but over the course of the season, you have to win consistently at these sort of places.”
