French Open 2014: Andy Murray and Heather Watson seal victories

Andy Murray and Heather Watson safely navigated their way through the first round as they got their French Open assaults up and running.

While the likes of third seed Stan Wawrinka and former champion Li Na fell at the first hurdle, Murray and Watson made no mistake with their respective tests.

Murray burst into a two-set lead in his match with Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev in little over an hour, only for his serve to desert him as he lost the third.

However, the 27-year-old regained his form to comfortably wrap up the fourth set for a 6-1 6-4 3-6 6-3 victory and will now face Australia’s Marinko Matosevic or Dustin Brown of Germany in round two.

Earlier in the day, Watson secured a straight-sets victory over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova to advance into the second round.

Watson, who came through qualifying, took her winning run at Roland Garros to four matches with a 6-3 6-4 victory.

The British number two has now won 11 matches in May alone following victory at the Prague Open and faces Romanian fourth seed Simona Halep next up.

“I’m happy with how I played today,” said Watson. “I took it like any other match that I have had this year.

“I’ve been working very hard, staying very focused, going to bed on time, eating the right things, just doing everything I possibly can to be prepared for the next day.

“So it’s not by accident that I’m winning these matches, it’s because I’ve worked hard for it.”
