Andy Murray booked his place in the fourth round of the French Open after a nail-biting five-set encounter with Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber.

After a marathon 12-10 win in the fifth set at Roland Garros, he will now face Fernando Verdasco for a place in the quarter-finals after the Spaniard won in straight sets against home favourite Richard Gasquet.

I was cramping. That was what it was. It wasn’t something I went into the match with. It was the first five-set match I played since my surgery

The third-round encounter against Kohlschreiber resumed at 7-7 in the fifth after play was halted on Saturday due to bad light.

And the Scot had to hold his nerve when he saved a break point but eventually came through and converted his second match point to seal the win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10.

“I think considering the circumstances it was pretty high standard,” said Murray.

“It’s obviously very tough. I didn’t sleep much and I woke up quite a few times. I was ready to play at four, five in the morning.

“I was very nervous. It’s not easy coming back at 7-7.”

It was Murray’s first five-set match since returning from injury and he admitted that he was struggling at times.

He added: “I was cramping. That was what it was. It wasn’t something I went into the match with. It was the first five-set match I played since my surgery.”
