French Open 2014: Andy Murray cruises but Heather Watson beaten
French Open 2014: Andy Murray reaches round three but Heather Watson is beaten in straight sets
Andy Murray made light work of Australian Marinko Matosevic to reach the third round of the French Open.
The 27-year-old seventh seed won 6-3 6-1 6-3 in one hour and 54 minutes on Court One at Roland Garros to set up a clash against 28th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber after the German beat Denis Istomin.
“I returned very well in the second serve,” said Murray. “I attacked it very well. My timing was there on both sides, forehand and backhand side on that shot.
“That was for me was the best part of my game today.”
Meanwhile, fellow Briton Heather Watson was beaten 6-2 6-4 by Romanian fourth seed Simona Halep.
“I’m a bit disappointed right now,” said Watson. “It has been a good few weeks for me. This was my third clay court tournament and it’s gone well.
“Today was tough. Simona played very well, as I knew she would. I don’t think I was on my best game.
“I made a lot more unforced errors than I usually do, and I thought my first serve percentage wasn’t very high.
“I wasn’t helping myself getting any free points with that. But at the end of the day, she made hardly any unforced errors. She made me make those unforced errors. Got to give her credit for that.”
