Nigel Adkins expressed his satisfaction at the “progress” Reading have made under his stewardship after an impressive win at Fulham.

Playing their first game since their relegation from the top flight last weekend, Hal Robson-Kanu gave the visitors the lead in the 12th minute before dispatching his penalty after half-time.

Bryan Ruiz pulled one back for the hosts but Adam Le Fondre added a third for Adkins’ men at Craven Cottage.

Ruiz’s header then gave the home side another boost but Jem Karacan’s 83rd-minute goal wrapped up a victory for the visitors.

“There has been a good steady progression in every game [since I came here],” Adkins told BBC Sport.

“To come away from home and score four is good. It was exciting for the supporters. The attitude and application has been first class from the players and all we can do is keep looking forward.”

Meanwhile, Fulham boss Martin Jol admitted his side underperformed before the break and warned the Cottagers that their Premier League status is still not secured.

“The first half was not good enough by our standards,” said Jol. “We wanted to take the initiative. We gave away easy and cheap goals and we have to change that. Although they played better we were still in it.

“We haven’t been that good recently since getting the 40 points. Today Reading was the game to gain something and get safe.

“We have to get some more points. We said our goal difference was probably a point but that has changed in the last few weeks so we need a couple more points.”
