Dimitar Berbatov admitted 10-man Fulham almost “threw the game away” after the Cottagers held on to secure victory against a battling Queens Park Rangers side.

The home side raced into a three-goal lead at Craven Cottage thanks to a brace from Berbatov and a Clint Hill own goal but Adel Taarabt pulled one back for the Hoops just before half-time.

Loic Remy made amends for a penalty miss shortly after the break by firing in a second for QPR but Fulham managed to hold on despite Steve Sidwell’s red card for a dangerous slide on Armand Traore.

“We almost threw the game away,” Berbatov told Sky Sports.

“We were three goals up and comfortable and then in the second half we were a bit childish maybe and they scored the second goal and they started to believe. But in the end we held on.

“We should have scored more but in the end the three points are good for us.

“The only time they could score was when we made mistakes. The [second] goal for them lifted their spirits. When you look back, you see mistakes and you try to correct them next time.”

Berbatov, who moved to Fulham from Manchester United last summer, has now scored 13 goals in 27 games for his new club.

And the Bulgarian is enjoying his first season in west London after the Cottagers moved onto 39 points with Monday’s win.

He added: “It’s great. I’m enjoying my football here. You can see it on the pitch, by the goals I score and the way I play.

“It’s going great for me and the team and I hope we continue this way.”
