Martin Jol heaped praise on man-of-the-match Dimitar Berbatov after the striker’s brace helped 10-man Fulham beat Queens Park Rangers.

The Bulgarian dispatched an eighth-minute penalty before doubling his side’s advantage in the 22nd minute.

A Clint Hill own goal made it 3-0 to the home side but Adel Taarabt netted just before the break and Loic Remy scored after the restart to set up a tense finale.

However, Fulham held on despite being reduced to 10 men when Steve Sidwell was sent off – and Jol singled out Berbatov for praise after the game.

He told Sky Sports: “He works ever so hard and that is a good thing. A player as good as him who works that hard, that is what we like. He’s a great player for us.”

Jol, whose side are 10th in the Premier League table and on 39 points, admitted that the Cottagers’ second-half display left a lot to be desired.

“It was a great game for the spectators with two different halves,” he continued. “In the first half we played much better than them. In the second half we probably made they mistakes they made in the first half.”

Reflecting on his side’s targets for the rest of the season, Jol added: “We had three unexpected points against Spurs.

“We always thought that the game against QPR would be vital and of course it was vital.

“Hopefully 39 points will be enough [to stay up] but it’s a big struggle. It’s the only competition in the world that when you are 10th you can still go down.

“There are a few clubs above us like Swansea so hopefully we can go a little bit higher in the league table.”
