Bayern Munich have announced that Pep Guardiola will replace Jupp Heynckes at the end of the season.

The former Barcelona manager has penned a three-year deal until 2016, ending speculation he could take charge of Chelsea or Manchester City this summer.

The 41-year-old will replace Heynckes, who is set to retire at the end of the season.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, with Queens Park Rangers’ capture of Loic Remy also sparking a response on the social media site.

Former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) is not that surprised by the appointment: “Interesting but not particularly surprising choice of club for Pep Guardiola. Bayern Munich one of very few viable options. Only other was Chelsea to my mind. All other obvious options have strong incumbents. I think Chelsea’s target is Mourinho.”

Everton captain Phil Neville (‏@fizzer18) believes Guardiola’s choice of club indicates the Bundesliga’s rising stock in European football: “Pep Guardiola will be Bayern Munich manager next seaaon – I didn’t see that coming, was certain he’d end up in the Premier League! German football is strong -good young players fantastic stadiums and Bayern one of the biggest clubs in the world suppose a good move!”

German tennis legend Boris Becker ‏(@Becker_Boris) is surprised by the news: “WoW!!! Hoeness ist 1Zauberer, Guardiola moves to Munich …”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon ‏(@OfficialNeil) was clearly out-of-the-loop too: “Pep for Bayern …wow!”

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (‏@morriskid) was hoping that Guardiola would move to Chelsea: “So Bayern Munich are going to get Pep for next year… great appointment!! Gutted as a Chelsea fan he’s now ruled out though…Yes like most Chelsea fans, I’d love to see Jose [Mourinho] back as well but I cannot see that happening at all…I fear he’ll be in Manchester soon!!”

Ajax winger Ryan Babel ‏(@RyanBabel) wonders if Pep will bring the Spanish contingent to Munich: “Pep Guardiola to Bayern ? Hmmmm this is gonna be something special for German football… Will he bring some players in from Barca? I don’t think so but he might bring just other Spanish players in…”

Former Aston Villa man Ian Taylor ‏(@IanTaylor7) is shocked: “#Guardiola to #BayernMunich Wow.”

Former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright (‏@Mark__Bright) fell for the red herring: “#Pep had us all fooled there, Bayern Munich, said he hopes to coach in the #Premier League #redherring”

Meanwhile, Remy’s QPR move had to take a backseat…

Marseille midfielder Joey Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) reckons Remy will be a success: “@tonyfernandes best of luck to you both. Loic is a great guy and a fantastic player…”

QPR owner Tony Fernandes (‏@tonyfernandes) welcomes the new signing: “Bonjour Loic. Welcome to your new family QPR.”

Former Sunderland star Michael Gray (@mickygray33) reckons Remy could fire QPR to safety: “Loic Remy could be a very important signing for QPR… Will it be enough to keep them up!!! Only time will tell.”

Finally, Louis Saha (‏@louissaha08) is getting prepared for life after Sunderland: “It is time to turn left or right for me. Huge corner.”
