Diego Lugano scored a second-half equaliser to ensure Pepe Mel avoided a losing start to his West Brom career as the Baggies played out a 1-1 draw with Everton at Hawthorns.

The Toffees had taken a first-half lead through Kevin Mirallas after the Belgian combined with Romelu Lukaku, before Uruguay international Lugano levelled with 15 minutes remaining.

Here is the pick of the Twitter reaction from the professionals in chronological order, as Everton failed to take advantage of their chance to leapfrog top-four rivals Liverpool.

Former Everton defender Kevin Kilbane ‏(@kdkilbane77) points out that it’s a very un-Roberto Martinez goal: “Route 1 from @Everton!”

Norwich City defender Elliott Bennett (‏@Ebenno88) is impressed with Everton midfielder Mirallas: “Pace and anticipation great run from Mirallas and calm finish as well. Everton looking very good this season.”

Ex-Toffees midfielder Andrei Kanchelskis ‏(@AAKanchelskis) is a fan of the new Toffee flying down the wing: “OH KEVIN MIRALLAS!”

Ex-West Ham striker John Hartson (‏@JohnHartson10) feels the old way is still effective: “Good goal Mirallas who says route one football is a thing of the past!! Good big man up top.. #veryeffective”

Huddersfield Town striker James Vaughan ‏(@vaughany08) has to calm the baying Everton fans on Twitter after an ill-advised Corrie post: “Can’t lie coronation street got kind of emotional tonight!! […] I am watching the match people relax. Ever heard of Sky Go? It’s dead good. You can watch footy on your iPad while you watch something else on tv.”

Everton legend Neville Southall (‏@NevilleSouthall) isn’t happy with his former side’s second-half performance: “WestBrom dragging us down to their level need a second goal…”

Another Toffee hero Peter Reid ‏(@reid6peter) agrees with the ex-goalkeeper: “Poor defending, giving the ball away to easily.”

More from Kilbane (‏@kdkilbane77) as Everton concede: “Seamus off……#fantasyfootall team in turmoil!”

Spanish starlet Gerard Deulofeu ‏(@gerardeulofeu) is happy with a point: “Good point lads! To continue working. #Everton #COYB”

Finally, injured Everton midfielder Darron Gibson (‏@D_gibson4) defends his team-mates in a lengthy update: “Good point in the end, lads worked their socks off! On to the next 1! […] If we weren’t at out best and we got a point does that not make it a good point? People tweeting me saying we were sh**, not good enough…. […] So really you should be happy with a point! It could have been a lot worse we could have lost! But we didn’t! […] Listen the lads don’t go out on the pitch to play bad or to lose the game! We had an off nite! It’s football, it happens! […] The players will be just as disappointed as the fans, they want the CPL just as much as the fans do! They wanted to win, but didn’t! Move on.”
