Happy birthday, Jose! 10 reasons to celebrate Chelsea boss’ birthday

1. THAT news conference

No one Chelsea fan could ever forget 2 July 2004.

2. Home comforts

Jose Mourinho’s remarkable record as manager at Stamford Bridge remains intact following his second coming. His team have never been beaten in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge under his management. And aside from a draw against West Brom, his Chelsea side have won all 10 of their top-flight games in west London this term.

3. Family values

The Special One showed his softer side when he celebrated Chelsea’s third goal against Southampton in December 2013 with his son above the dugout.

4. This quote…

A parting shot at Roman Abramovich in 2007: “The style of how we play is very important. But it is omelettes and eggs. No eggs – no omelettes! It depends on the quality of the eggs. In the supermarket you have class one, two or class three eggs and some are more expensive than others and some give you better omelettes. So when the class one eggs are in Waitrose and you cannot go there, you have a problem.”

5. And this one

On his relationship with the Chelsea owner during his first spell at the club: “If Roman Abramovich helped me out in training we would be bottom of the league and if I had to work in his world of big business, we would be bankrupt.”

6. And this one, too

On a Chelsea injury crisis: “It is like having a blanket that is too small for the bed. You pull the blanket up to keep your chest warm and your feet stick out. I cannot buy a bigger blanket becuase the supermarket is closed. But I am content because the blanket is cashmere. It is no ordinary blanket.”

7. Ten years, 14 trophies

Since taking over at Chelsea for the first time back in 2004, Mourinho has won, in spells with the Blues, Inter Milan and Real Madrid: two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups, a Community Shield, two Serie A titles, one Champions League, one Coppa Italia, one Italian Super Cup, one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey and one Spanish Super Cup. Not bad.

8. This celebration at Old Trafford in 2004

Darting down the touchline as Porto boss after Francisco Costinha’s last-minute equaliser sent Manchester United crashing out of the Champions League.

9. Showing his human side

After leading Inter Milan to an historic Treble in 2010, Mourinho’s emotional farewell to Marco Materazzi.

10. And he cuts his own hair. With Fernando Torres’ clippers

After giving himself a trim back in November 2013, Mourinho explained: “Some people can’t do what I did. In a couple of months I’ll have hair again. Some other people cannot do it. I decided to do it. I asked Fernando to give me his machine and I did it myself in front of the mirror. It’s nice and cheap. Mrs Mourinho, I sent a picture before I arrived at home to see if I could go in… Yes, no problem.”
