Zimbabwe could return to Test cricket as early as next year according to former captain Heath Streak.

Streak is currently bowling coach of the national team, who performed above expectations to reach the final of a triangular tournament with Sri Lanka and India at home this month.

And the 36-year-old, who took 216 test wickets in 65 Tests for his country, insists they have a crop of players capable of competing at the highest level once again.

“The guys have improved a lot in terms of their play and confidence after beating some of the big teams,” said Streak.

“Those recent victories have given them some belief that they can compete at the highest levels.

“However, with regards to Test cricket return, there is still a lot that needs to be done and to be realistic we can make a return sometime next year.”

Streak forms part of a coaching team alongside former England batsman Alan Butcher.
