Noel Valladares Good save early on to deny Shaqiri. Could only be faulted for the third goal, where he perhaps went to ground too early as Shaqiri’s finish rolled down the middle of the goal. 6

Juan Carlos Garcia Failed to co-ordinate with the centre-halves, allowing Shaqiri, and others, to drift into the spaces between them. 5

Maynor Figueroa Like the rest of the defence was baffled by the movement and speed of the three Swiss attacking midfielders – and Shaqiri. A tough test, no doubt, but the Hull defender didn’t really even scrape a pass. 5

Victor Bernardez Missed an important tackle on Drmic which led to the second goal. 5

Brayan Beckeles Probably the least at fault of the defence for the goals and got forward reasonably, but showed a real full-back’s finish on the turn from a loose ball from a corner. 6

Roger Espinoza Ineffectual, as shown by his half-time substitution. 5

Wilson Palacios The Stoke player offered a lot of industry, but, one quality lofted ball to his brother Jerry aside, not a great deal of quality on the ball. 6

Jorge Claros Failed to really assert himself in the first half, but was one of the architects of the team’s improvement in the second. 6

OB Garcia A solid if unspectacular presence on the right-hand side. 6

Carlo Costly Struggled to impose himself on the game before limping off injured just before half time. 5

Jerry Bengston Found good goal-scoring opportunities on at least three occasions – but had a shot blocked on the line, inexplicably tried a diving header when a boot was far the wiser option and put a free header straight at the keeper from six yards out. 4

Substitutes

Jerry Palacios Offered a physical presence up front. Unlucky not to have gained a penalty. 6

Osman Chavez Made a real difference on the left after coming on, providing a few telling crosses and balls which deserved to be finished. 8

Diego Bengalio Not troubled much but performed his duties capably enough when he was called upon. 6

Ricardo Rodriguez The young defender had a solid game at left-back, containing Garcia for the most part, and making a crucial block on the line from Bengston. 7

Fabian Schaer Called up for his start of the tournament and performed adequately, but a better strike-force would surely have made the scoreline look less rosy for the defence. 6

Johan Djourou Sloppy on two balls early in the second half. Very lucky to get away without conceding a penalty after Palacios got the wrong side of him. He will need to improve for the knockout stages. 4

Stephan Lichtsteiner Generally solid, but Chavez got the better of him a few times. 6

Gokhan Inler Controlled the game from the middle of the park, and played the initial pass for the first goal, a superb searching 40-yard ball to Drmic. 7

Valon Behrami The ex-West Ham man shielded the defence well and dealt with the Honduran’s physical play. 7

Admir Mehmedi Tracked back well a few times and linked play up well, but should have done better than to tamely volley the ball into the keeper’s arms late on. 7

Josip Drmic Peeled away from the defence well and played a perfectly weighted ball for the first goal, provided an equally good assist for the second goal and connected brilliantly with Shaqiri to find gaps behind the defence all evening. 8

Granit Xhaka A decent performance but the least effective of a very lively front four. 6

Xherdan Shaqiri (Man of the match) A superb performance, but not just for his goals – he seemed to find five yards (at least) wherever he went and when he didn’t use it to strike on goal, threaded some intricate balls behind the defence for midfield runners. His first goal – a 25-yard thunderbolt into the top corner – is a good shout for the goal of the tournament so far. 9
