Hull 1 Sunderland 0: Poyet bemoans Cattermole red card
Hull 1 Sunderland 0: Gus Poyet admits his disappointment at the referee's decision to send off Lee Cattermole
Gus Poyet admitted his disappointment at the referee’s decision to send off Lee Cattermole after Sunderland were reduced to nine men in the first half at Hull City.
An own goal by Carlos Cuellar in the 25th minute ended up being the difference between the two teams after Cattermole was dismissed for a foul on Ahmed Elmohamady by referee Andre Marriner.
The visitors were then reduced to nine men in the first half when Andrea Dossena was red-carded for an awful challenge on David Meyler.
“I’m convinced he [Cattermole] didn’t deserve the red card,” said Poyet afterwards.
“I think sometimes people see Lee Cattermole make a challenge and it is not allowed because people put things in the minds of other people. We need to be fair to him. I’d like the pundits to comment.”
Meanwhile, Tigers boss Steve Bruce was left furious by Dossena’s challenge on Meyler.
“The second one is a horror challenge when I see that one again,” said Bruce.
“I know Lee Cattermole and I know what he is like as a competitor. But in today’s game you cannot make that challenge anymore. In my opinion the referee got them both right.”
