Ian Wright believes that Arsenal’s players must “repay” Arsene Wenger with a win against Bayern Munich after Saturday’s shock loss to Blackburn.

The Gunners slumped to a 1-0 home defeat by the Championship side as they crashed out of the FA Cup to lower-league opposition for the first time under Wenger.

Former Arsenal striker Wright says that Wenger’s team selection for Saturday’s game could have been a factor in the loss but has called on the north Londoners to step up to the plate against Bayern at the Emirates on Tuesday.

“I believe the Blackburn result could have been avoided had Wenger taken the FA Cup seriously and then started worrying about the European game on Sunday,” Wright told the Sun.

“Putting Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla on the bench sent out a negative message. As a former player, you know that if a manager is not that fussed about a competition, that attitude creeps into the team.

“My former manager approaches tonight’s clash with Bayern Munich under unbelievable pressure and I hope the Arsenal players he has shown such faith in are aware of this. It’s time they repaid Wenger with a massive performance.”

Arsenal v Bayern Munich: Pre-match facts

• The teams met at this stage in 2004-05, Bayern establishing a 3-1 lead in the home leg with Claudio Pizarro scoring their first two goals. It was enough to take them through despite Arsenal’s 1-0 win in the return.

• Four years previously the teams met in the second group stage when Bayern again had the upper hand, winning their home game 1-0 after a 2-2 draw in London.

• Arjen Robben scored in Chelsea’s 2-0 away win at Arsenal on 18 December 2005. In his three years at Stamford Bridge he faced the Gunners four times and was never on the losing side.

• Franck Ribery plays for France alongside Bacary Sagna, Abou Diaby, Olivier Giroud, Sebastien Squillaci and Laurent Koscielny.
