Ian Wright has criticised Jose Mourinho’s decision to use Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba in a deep role.
The France international has been criticised for his subdued performances in the 2017-18 season following his return from a hamstring problem.
Pogba made a brilliant start to the campaign with two goals and two assists in his opening four games in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has been used as part of a midfield pair alongside summer signing Nemanja Matic in recent months but has struggled to fulfill his defensive duties.
Indeed, Pogba was substituted during Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley before he was left out of Mourinho’s starting XI for both legs of their 2-1 loss to Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16.
France head coach Didier Deschamps appeared to criticise Mourinho for not using Pogba in his best position.
Former Arsenal striker Wright supported Deschamps’ view and questioned why the Manchester United boss is reluctant to use Pogba in a more offensive role.
“[France manager Didier] Deschamps has already said that he is not being used right,” Wright told Sky Sports’ The Debate.
“You look at the way Pogba is with the character and the personality. The persona of him. He is a player that has to be free in what he is doing.
“Yes he can play Pogba a little deeper and he will spray those balls but play him further forward so that he can express himself. That is the kind of player he is.
“He wants to express himself and do that kind of stuff. It doesn’t look like rocket science to me.”
Manchester United signed Pogba in an £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in August 2016 after Sir Alex Ferguson sold the midfielder to the Italian club in an £800,000 deal back in 2012.
