Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Mata scored goals either side of half-time as Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

Azpilicueta capitalised on defensive mix-up to put the visitors in front at Emirates Stadium in the first half, before Mata’s superb solo strike made it 2-0 in the 66th minute.

The game inevitably prompted a flurry of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Former Norwich man Darren Huckerby ‏(@hucks6dh6) is surprised to see Bendtner in the line-up: “How does Bendtner get anywhere near the Arsenal first team, must’ve hid in the boot skip!”

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier (‏@mattletiss7) is not impressed by Arsenal’s defending as the Blues net the opener: “Good finish by ‘dave’ but poor header by jenkinson 0-1”

Celebrity Arsenal Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan) is not impressed by Carl Jenkinson’s poor header: “That’s the last time I’m letting Carl Jenkinson watch Man City play at the weekend. #Afc”

Wales international David Cotterill (‏@cotterill_david) rates Chelsea’s strength in depth: “Chelsea squad is a joke #CapitalOneCup”

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan ‏(@MichaelVaughan) is not impressed by a certain Denmark international: “Has Bendtner won a raffle prize to play?? Is Bendtner playing for Chelsea?”

Chelsea fan Trevor Nelson (‏@DJTrevorNelson) chimes in as Mata makes it 2-0: “The angriest goal celebration I have seen from Juan Mata #Chelsea”

Southampton man Luke Shaw ‏(@Luke_shaw3) likes the look of Mata’s strike: “Mataaaaa , what a goal !”

As does Sunderland’s Carlos Cuellar (‏@Cuellar24): “#Arsenal 0-2 #Chelsea @CesarAzpi @juanmata10 Spanish power #CapitalOneCup”

Morgan (‏@piersmorgan) has had enough: “Bendtner should be sold on January 1 for that performance. And that headband. #Afc”

But Lord Sugar ‏(@Lord_Sugar) believes the loss may suit Arsenal: “@piersmorgan arsenal fail to make last 8 for first time in 11 years. But don’t worry it is a deliberate Wenger strategy. Concentrate on PL”

Crawley Town defender James Hurst (@hursty43) singles out Chelsea’s Gary Cahill for special praise: “I think cahill is one of the best centre halves in the world at the moment”

Goal-scorer Mata (@juanmata10) is delighted, and posts the picture above: “Very happy for the team and for this guy…@cesarazpi #ktbffh #Azpi”

And finally, Arsenal legend Ian Wright (‏@IanWright0) looks on the bright side: “That’s a pity. That means we’ll only win the CL PL and FA cup ! Goodnight all :-))) x”
