The former Arsenal striker Ian Wright warns the board about their next appointment as manager
Ian Wright has warned the Arsenal board that Arsene Wenger’s replacement needs to be a manager that the fans will immediately get behind.
The Gunners boss’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season but the north London club are reported to have offered the 67-year-old a new two-year contract extension.
Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table and seven points adrift of the top four after the Gunners played out a 2-2 draw with Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The north London side crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the seventh successive season after a 10-2 aggregate loss to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich last month.
Arsenal have been linked with Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone and Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli in recent months before it emerged the north Londonders had offered Wenger a new deal.
Speaking to BBC Sport’s 606 show about the next Arsenal manager, Wright said:
“‘The fans will be the ones who ultimately decide Arsene Wenger’s fate’ – those are the words of an Arsenal board member. That is exactly what the fans are doing. They are making their voices heard.
“If a new manager was to come in now though, it needs to be someone who will instantly make the fans think “yes – we have the right man for the job.”
