Wilshere in line to replace Arteta for Arsenal’s trip to Newcastle
Arsene Wenger reveals that he may call on Jack Wilshere to step in for Mikel Arteta ahead of Arsenal's crunch clash at Newcastle
Arsene Wenger has revealed that he may call on Jack Wilshere to step in for Mikel Arteta for Arsenal’s crunch clash at Newcastle United on Sunday.
Arteta was substituted late on during the Gunners’ 4-1 win over Wigan Athletic with a calf strain and Wenger concedes that the chances of the Spaniard being available for the weekend’s game are “minimal”.
Wenger recently revealed that Wilshere requires surgery to remove a pin from his ankle at the end of the season and said he would use him sparingly in the club’s final games.
But with Arteta looking set to miss out, Wenger says he could call on the England international as the Gunners look to secure a top-four finish with victory at St James’ Park.
“For the weekend, we have the uncertainty over Mikel Arteta, who had to come off just before the end of the Wigan game with a calf strain,” Wenger said.
“Honestly, his chances of being available are minimal. I have to be realistic and prepare for another solution.
“He [Wilshere] is an option. We will monitor him until Sunday and I will make a decision very late over what I will do.”
Arsenal will have Olivier Giroud available for selection again after the striker’s three-game suspension following his red card at Fulham last month.
“I am happy to have him back,” Wenger added. “He missed some games and will be full of enthusiasm.”
