Jamie Carragher has praised Liverpool FC for putting the pressure back on Manchester City after Saturday night’s 3-2 victory at Newcastle United.

Liverpool FC made a good start to the Premier League clash when PFA player of the year Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock in the 13th minute at St James’ Park.

However, the Merseyside outfit were punished for some sloppy defending less than 10 minutes later when Christian Atsu netted from close range.

Mohamed Salah restored the away side’s lead before the break when the Egypt international guided a finish into the net following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s brilliant cross.

But Newcastle continued to fight and Salomon Rondon levelled in the 53rd minute when the Venezuela international powered a finish past Alisson Becker.

Liverpool FC were without Roberto Firmino for the trip to Newcastle and Salah was replaced in the second half due to a suspected concussion.

However, Divock Origi managed to score a dramatic winner with three minutes left to play to secure a 3-2 victory.

Liverpool FC moved back to the top of the Premier League table and two points ahead of Manchester City, who will host Leicester City at The Etihad on Monday night.

Former Reds defender Carragher warned Manchester City that the pressure is back Pep Guardiola’s men after Liverpool FC’s five-goal thriller at Newcastle.

“What this team are doing is extraordinary,” Carragher told Sky Sports after the game.

“The problem Liverpool have is that they’re alongside another extraordinary team in this title race. It means it goes to the last day and it means City have to keep providing the answers.

“What both teams have done I’ve never seen before in the English top flight. It’s sad that one team has to finish second, but that’s football – you can only have one winner.

“The spirit after Wednesday night, a poor result, to come here – a tough place to go no doubt about it against Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle – this support were right at it.

“This was a difficult game, probably the most difficult game left out of any of Liverpool or City’s games, and they’ve got the three points.

“Now, with City players watching tonight – Liverpool will be watching Monday night.”
