Jamie Redknapp: Liverpool need this signing more than new left-back
The former Liverpool captain says left-backs don't lose clubs titles but defensive midfielders do

Jamie Redknapp says signing a defensive midfielder is more of a pressing concern than a left-back for Liverpool.
The Reds have already signed seven players in the summer transfer window as Jurgen Klopp looked to give his squad a facelift.
Loris Karius moved to Liverpool in £4.7m deal from Bundesliga side Mainz before Klopp snapped up Sadio Mane in a £30m deal from their Premier League rivals Southampton.
The Reds completed deals to sign Ragnar Klavan and Alex Manninger from German club Augsburg before Liverpool sealed a £25m deal from Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.
Alberto Moreno struggled at left-back in Liverpool’s opening game against Arsenal before James Milner was played in an unorthodox full-back role against Burnley.
Former Liverpool captain Redknapp believes the Reds need a defensive midfielder to provide balance to the side more than a new left-back.
“I’ve always said full-backs don’t lose you titles. Not having a proper defensive midfielder can,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“It’s a vital role. They need someone who knows where to be when they haven’t got the ball. That’s not Jordan Henderson. He’s an attacking midfielder. It’s not James Milner, either.
“Without that player protecting the defence you end up with the kind of ‘shock’ results we’ve seen Liverpool experience. The defeat at Burnley, last season’s losses to Watford and Newcastle.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season.
