Jamie Redknapp believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s chances of becoming the permanent Manchester United manager hinges on a top-four finish this season.

The former Norway international took over the reins of the Old Trafford outfit from Jose Mourinho in December.

Mourinho left Manchester United in sixth place in the Premier League table and 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea FC.

However, their nine-game unbeaten run in the English top flight under Solskjaer has seen Manchester United hoist themselves in the top four.

The Red Devils moved into the top four for the first time this season after a 3-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Chelsea FC’s 6-0 loss to Manchester City relegated Maurizio Sarri’s men to sixth spot behind Manchester United and Arsenal.

Solskjaer’s men are a point ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal ahead of their next Premier League clash against Liverpool FC on Sunday 24 February.

Former Liverpool FC captain Redknapp outlined what Solskjaer needs to achieve to secure the permanent position at Manchester United.

“United still have four of their five main rivals to play before the end of the season, starting with Liverpool at home a week on Sunday,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.

“Slip up in those fixtures, lose ground on the top four and there will be doubts as to whether Solskjaer is the man to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the title next season.

“Ultimately, winning the Premier League has to be the aim for a club of United’s size.”

The Red Devils have beaten both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur since Solskjaer’s appointment but Manchester United will still have to face Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC and Manchester City in the Premier League.

Manchester United will take on PSG in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash on Tuesday.
