Tottenham Houtspur have confirmed that Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen is heading to White Hart Lane, subject to a medical.

The 25-year-old is believed to have cost Spurs around £9.5m, and he joins Gylfi Sigurdsson in arriving at the the north London club since the recent appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as manager.

Here, we take a look at some of the reaction from Spurs fans on Twitter.

Tottenham fan Phil House ‏(@Phil_House) advises Vertonghen it is time to make a change to his Twitter profile: “Welcome @Jan_Vertonghen best change your profile bio pretty quick.”

While The Fincher ‏(@TheFincher) is delighted with the signing: “@Jan_Vertonghen good lad. You’ll love it at Spurs. Wear the shirt with pride Jan!”

And Spurs fan Philip Bramley ‏(@philbramley) is confident Vertonghen will be a success: “@Jan_Vertonghen welcome Jan sure you will become a legend!!”

Neil Zeff (‏@NeilZeff) is happy Spurs stole a march on their rivals: “@Jan_Vertonghen Welcome..! Very excited by you signing for us #COYS”

Tottenham supporter James Tillcock ‏(@jtillcock82) can see a bright future under Andre Villas-Boas: “Jan Vertonghen in next, the future is bright, the future is AVB! #spurs”

Meanwhile, Arsenal fan Marc Ladu (‏@arsenalegend) is disappointed to miss out on the centre-half: “I hate Spurs but they did well getting Vertonghen for £8million. Bargain.”

Anton ‏(@0h2beAGooner) feels the same: “So angry that Spurs signed Vertonghen. Best defender in the EPL next year, hands down.”

Adam Jones ‏(@AJones1005) is delighted with Villas-Boas’ shrewd acquisitions: “AVB has been at Spurs for a week and made two great signings – Vertonghen is a cracking defender, makes their back line a lot stronger.”

While Bradley Appleton ‏(@Brad_Appleton) agrees: “Loving AVB, actually buying quality players, Vertonghen and Ledley King = clean sheets. Plus a bid for Lloris. #FairPlay”

And ELMO ‏(@WordOfMo) finds it funny that Spurs have beaten their rivals to the signings of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Vertonghen: “Liverpool nearly had Sigurdsson.. Arsenal wanted Vertonghen.. Spurs signed them both. #Winning”

But Tom Turner ‏(@TomTurnerUK) is hoping both signings turn out to be poor purchases: “If Gylfi Sigurdsson and Vertonghen turn out to be rubbish, it will even funnier than the Harry Redknapp debacle.”

Hotspur Related ‏(@HotspurRelated) says it has been a perfect week: “Takeover talks, Vertonghen, Sigurdsson & AVB all in, world-class players linked, fringe players sold – If Carlsberg did weeks at Tottenham….”

Finally, John Attwood (@Johnny_Ray72) points out a striking familiarity between the new signing and the Spurs manager: “@Jan_Vertonghen Did you sign because AVB’s your dad? Seriously, welcome, you’re going to love it, we’re going to love you!”
