Jermain Defore believes Chelsea will offer Frank Lampard a new contract to stay beyond the summer.

The 34-year-old midfielder scored his 28th England goal in a 8-0 victory over San Marino on Friday night after notching up his 200th Chelsea strike in a 2-0 win against West Ham last weekend.

Lampard, who was signed in a £11m deal from the Hammers in 2001, is set to become a free agent in the summer, with the Blues yet to offer the midfielder a new deal.

But Spurs striker Defoe cannot envisage the Blues allowing their vice-captain to leave at the end of the season.

“I don’t know his situation at Chelsea but in my opinion he is someone you can’t replace because of the amount of goals he has scored over the years,” said Defoe.

“He is a special player. He can easily go on for another two or three years.

“At the end of the day you know you are going to get goals. You know what you are going to get from Frank and goals win games.

“I’m sure Chelsea won’t get rid of him. He is a special player.”

Defoe, who scored twice in England’s emphatic win on Friday, hopes the Three Lions can replicate their impressive performance against Group H leaders Montenegro on Tuesday.

“Some of their players are playing at the top level in European football right now and we have been there before so we know the dangers,” he added.

“You look at the state of the group and it’s a really critical game and we have to be ready for it.”
