Joe Cole’s Liverpool switch sparks mixed reaction

News of Joe Cole’s decision to sign for Liverpool has provoked debate amongst football fans.

The 28-year-old had been linked to various clubs over the last six months including Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

But earlier today it emerged Cole had agreed to join Liverpool on a four-year deal, subject to a medical.

Cole’s arrival is a welcome boost for Reds fans as a fresh wave of optimism sweeps across Liverpool following a disheartening season.

The signing also highlights Roy Hodgson’s desire to introduce some much-needed stability at Anfield.

We asked our Twitter followers to share their thoughts on Cole’s move.

@stevetitty believes the signing is a statement of intent from Hodgson’s Liverpool: “It shows Torres and Stevie G that they mean business this year.”

And @ikwerreman supported the move for Cole, tweeting: “Good for the club. We need his presence in midfield.”

Chelsea fans were not so upbeat over Cole’s move. During a seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge the England international won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups and two League Cup successes.

@nanoublue said: “Obviously it’s a good deal. Joe will do great at Liverpool. But I can’t help with feeling down now that he’s leaving London.”

Meanwhile @CFCFanVI believes Cole would have been better off moving to White Hart Lane: “I really think Spurs would have been a better fit.”

Yossi Benayoun’s recent £5 million transfer to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool means the two clubs have switched two similar creative players.

And Chelsea season ticket holder @tim_rolls questioned the logic of the move: “Good business for Liverpool. Losing Cole and paying £5m for Benayoun, not so good for Chelsea?”

While it does appear a smart financial move by Christian Purslow, Liverpool’s managing director, Cole’s reported £90,000-a-week wage packet is a cause for concern.

“Personally I think 90k-per-week is a bit over the top for a player who has been dogged by injuries, especially his knees. Time will tell if he’s a good signing,” said @bidey84.

A valid argument and perhaps a potential reason for Chelsea’s refusal to meet Cole’s wage demands.
