Jon Flanagan hails Liverpool’s ‘massive three points’ ahead of Spurs clash

Jon Flanagan hailed a “massive three points” for Liverpool in the Premier League title race after the Reds were 2-1 winners against Sunderland.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard made the breakthrough in the 39th minute with a ferocious free-kick which beat Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

The Reds, who started Wednesday night’s fixture four points behind leaders Chelsea, doubled their lead thanks to Daniel Sturridge’s 20th Premier League strike of the season.

However, Liverpool youngster Flanagan was made to pay for switching off at a corner as Ki Sung-Yueng ghosted into the area and finished from close range with 14 minutes remaining.

Gerrard admitted Sunderland made the home side’s final 10 minutes uncomfortable as Jozy Altidore came close to denting Liverpool’s title hopes.

“You have to give credit to Sunderland, they have come to make it difficult for us, they were difficult to break down,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.

“We need to learn that when we go two goals ahead we can’t concede. We need to hold on and pass it better.”
