Jose Mourinho: Chelsea ‘in control’ of Thibaut Courtois situation
Jose Mourinho insists he has no worries about the speculation over goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois' Chelsea future
Jose Mourinho insists he has no worries about the speculation over Thibaut Courtois’ future because Chelsea are “in control” of the situation.
The Belgian goalkeeper joined the west Londoners from Genk back in 2011 but has yet to feature for the Premier League side after being loaned out to Atletico Madrid.
The 21-year-old has established himself as a mainstay of Diego Simeone’s side in Spain, helping the club win the Europa League, Copa del Rey and Uefa Super Cup.
Courtois has been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent weeks, with Atletico also reportedly keen to sign the youngster on a permanent deal.
But Mourinho insists that Courtois’ future has not even crossed his mind.
“It’s a very good problem because our goal is safe and financially we are also very safe because their [Petr Cech and Courtois] value in the market is the value of the best,” said Mourinho.
“We don’t have a problem – the teams with a problem are those without good goalkeepers. We have other guys in this moment giving us the security we need to allow Courtois to be on loan.
“In this moment I don’t think about [Courtois’ future]. It doesn’t worry me because our situation is fantastic and everything is under our control.
“We control the situation; not Barcelona, not Atletico. We control the situation, so that’s fine.
“We have the best goalkeeper in the world and the best young goalkeeper in the world. I don’t think many people will disagree with me.”
Chelsea boss Mourinho also singled out Cech for special praise as the 31-year-old shot-stopper prepares to make his 300th Premier League appearance for the Blues against Cardiff on Saturday.
“He came here in a season before Carlo [Cudicini] was voted player of the year for Chelsea and was playing very well,” said Mourinho.
“Petr came here very young and immediately, in the first game of the season – Chelsea v Man United – kept a clean sheet. His book is full of clean sheets and the guy is fantastic. His work ethic is fantastic, too.”
