Jose Mourinho coy on Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes
Jose Mourinho refuses to accept that his side are favourites for the Premier League title despite their seven-point lead
Jose Mourinho once again refused to accept that Chelsea are in pole position to win the Premier League this season, despite watching his side move seven points clear at the top of the table.
The Blues extended their lead at the summit thanks to a comprehensive 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
If we win the next nine matches we may not be champions
Mourinho has maintained that Champions League qualification has been his side’s priority this term and has relentlessly played down talk of the Blues winning the top-flight trophy.
And the Chelsea manager insisted that the west Londoners are purely focusing on securing a place in Europe’s elite club competition – and not a title challenge.
“The top four is ours to lose, now we are 13 points from Tottenham and 18 from Man United and Everton,” said Mourinho.
“Objective number one, the top four, is in our pocket, now let’s go for objective two, which is the top three and automatic qualification for the Champions League.”
Mourinho continued: “If we win the next nine matches we may not be champions. If Man City win the 12 they have they are champions.
“They have their destiny in their hands, we don’t. It doesn’t depend on us, it depends on them. I just know I would prefer to have my destiny in my own hands.”
