Jose Mourinho insists he stands by his decision to let Romelu Lukaku join Everton on loan for the season – and is expecting the Belgium international to flourish at Goodison Park.
Lukaku, 20, looked set to be given a chance to prove himself in the Blues’ first-team but the arrival of Samuel Eto’o at Stamford Bridge appeared to push the striker further down the pecking order.
And the Portuguese coach believes that Lukaku will benefit from regular football with the Toffees after his successful loan spell at West Bromwich Albion last season.
“It is important for Lukaku,” Mourinho told Chelsea TV.
“We have Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, and of course he would have had chances to play but another thing is to play basically every weekend.
“He had [possible] clubs, he had options and he made that decision, I have to respect that decision and hopefully it goes well for him and it goes well for everyone.”
Mourinho also expressed his satisfaction with his transfer dealings in the summer window and is now looking forward to focusing on the football.
He continued: “It is time for every one of us to think about the competitions and to think about the improvement of our players, and to stop thinking about selling and buying and who is coming and who is leaving.
“For us, I think everything was done properly and calmly and decisions were made with a lot of time [to spare].”
