Manchester United moved up to sixth place in the Premier League thanks to a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

After a goalless first half at Selhurst Park, Robin van Persie fired home a penalty after Marouane Chamakh brought down Patrice Evra in the box.

Wayne Rooney, who penned a new five-and-a-half year contract worth a reported £300,000-a-week on Friday, then added a second with a shot into the top corner in the 68th minute.

Saturday’s late kick-off attracted plenty of attention on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Former Liverpool man Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) takes a look at how United have set up: “Mata sitting deep midfield, playmaking, Fellaini pushing up alongside RvP when United counter.”

Ex-United defender Gary Neville (@GNev2) is unsure which way the game will go after a goalless first half in London: “So much possession but another 45mins drifted by! Could win / Could lose! You win you’ve been patient / you lose you’ve got no complaints!

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) salutes Rooney as his goal secures the win: “That’s why …. #Rooney”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) chimes in after United’s second: “What a goal from @WayneRooney . Give that man a pay rise!”

United defender Phil Jones (@Ph1lj0nes) is delighted with the win: “Well done guys! Great win today!!! #mufc #CRYMUN”

As is new signing Juan Mata (@juanmatagarcia), who takes to his Instagram account: “Good win today! Buena victoria! #mufc @manchesterunited”

Striker Robin van Persie (@Persie_Official) echoes Mata’s words: “Good win today”

And finally, ex-Red Devils defender Phil Neville (@fizzer18) tweets his satisfaction at the win: “Good win good performance – rest up now champions league tuesday!!!”
