Juan Mata admits he became “very emotional” watching Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund to win the Champions League on Saturday night.

Bayern triumphed 2-1 over their Bundesliga rivals thanks to Arjen Robben’s late winner at Wembley as the Bavarian club emerged victorious after losing three finals in four years.

Mata, who helped Chelsea beat Bayern to win Europe’s most prestigious trophy last season, followed the closing moments of Saturday’s clash after the Blues’ end-of-season friendly against Manchester City in New York.

And the 25-year-old playmaker said watching the showpiece brought back memories of their triumph in Munich 12 months ago.

“We could follow the last few minutes from the dressing room,” Mata wrote on his blog on grada360.com.

“Things became very emotional as the game was coming to an end, and it reminded me of the last two European finals we won! Bayern won their fifth title against a fantastic Borussia that amazed the whole Europe with their football.

“And Bayern’s season is amazing, keeping themselves at an incredible level in the Champions League, with three finals in the last four years.

“One of the greatest clubs in the history of football, for sure. Congratulations to both teams for such a good show, it was worthy of a final.”
