Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Loris Karius’s injury setback “isn’t cool” after the Liverpool signing was ruled out for six to eight weeks with a broken hand.

The Germany Under-21 international broke his hand during a collision with Dejan Lovren in Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat by Chelsea in their International Champions Cup clash in Pasadena.

Karius moved to the Reds in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga side Mainz at the start of the summer and was handed the number one shirt as he prepared to rival Belgium shot-stopper Simon Mignolet.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s clash against AC Milan at the Levi Stadium in San Jose, Klopp confirmed that Karius had suffered a broken hand which comes as a bitter blow to the Merseyside outfit.

“It’s not too cool. You never want to have an injured player. It always happens at the wrong time. There is never a good time with injuries,” Klopp said.

“Six, eight or 10 weeks it’ll take, it’s not too long. It’s not cool for the boy and it’s not cool for us.”

On the battle to be Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper, Klopp added: “This battle is decided for the next few weeks.”

Klopp continued: “I’m really happy we have Simon.”

Liverpool have made seven signings in the summer transfer window so far as Klopp looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title.

Karius was the first of the new arrivals before Liverpool snapped up Sadio Mane, Ragnar Klavan, Alex Manninger and Georginio Wijnaldum to his squad in July.
