Michael Owen has hinted that Cristiano Ronaldo could play a big role in what he believes will be a successful night for Juventus against Manchester United on Wednesday.

The Serie A holders will welcome the Premier League side to Turin in pursuit of a fourth successive victory in the Champions League group stage to lay down a marker in the European competition.

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Juventus in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford last month after Paulo Dybala scored a first-half winner to secure a huge three points for the Italian side.

Jose Mourinho’s side are unbeaten in their last four Premier League games to suggest the 20-time English champions are starting to turn a corner under the Portuguese head coach.

Manchester United have beaten Newcastle United, Everton and Bournemouth, while Mourinho’s men secured a credible 2-2 draw with title challengers Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge last month.

Former Liverpool FC striker Owen is backing Juventus to ease to victory over Manchester United in their Champions League meeting in Turin on Wednesday night.

“United will take heart from the fact that they have won their last two Champions League ties in Turin, but the Old Lady of Italian football looked a class apart from United at Old Trafford and they are taken to keep the points,” Owen told BetVictor.

“United are slowly improving in the Premier League but this will be a stiff test of that upturn in form.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has not scored in the Champions League in his last five games in the competition – he was largely quiet at Old Trafford last month, but he may be due a big game.”

Manchester United can take confidence from their good record in Turin in the Champions League during Sir Alex Ferguson’s 25-year spell in charge at Old Trafford.

Former Republic of Ireland international Roy Keane inspired Manchester United to a 3-2 win over Juventus in the Champions League semi-finals in 1999 to secure their place in the Camp Nou final.

Current Wales manager Ryan Giggs scored a wonder goal in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory at Juventus in the Champions League group stage in 2002-03.

Manchester United won the Champions League in 1999 and 2008 but lost to FC Barcelona in finals in 2009 and 2011.

Their only European success in the post-Ferguson era came in 2017 when Manchester United were 2-0 winners over Ajax in the Europa League showpiece.
