Former world No1 Kim Clijsters confirms she’ll retire after US Open

Former world number one Kim Clijsters has announced she will call time on a glittering career after the US Open in August.

The 28-year-old is a three-time champion at Flushing Meadows, most recently in 2010, and the Belgian is eager to end her career at the New York show piece.

It means Clijsters will have one last chance to win Wimbledon crown this summer – she will miss the French Open, where she has twice finished runner-up, due to a hip injury.

“As it stands I will end my career at the US Open. That is where I enjoyed my greatest triumphs and it is a very special place for me,” Clijsters said.

“The stadium is only about 45 minutes from our house in the United States and my parents-in-law will be present.”

Clijsters first retired in 2007 ahead of the birth of her daughter Jada, before the Australian Open winner returned in 2009 and went on to win the US Open crown in her first Major since her hiatus.
