Arsene Wenger sends message to Arsenal fans about Man United star
Arsene Wenger admits that he is a huge admirer of veteran Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick
Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is a huge admirer of Michael Carrick and admits that he regrets not being able to coach the Manchester United midfielder.
The veteran midfielder was recognised with a testimonial match at Old Trafford on Sunday as he celebrated 10 years at Manchester United.
Carrick has recently signed a new one-year contract to keep him at Manchester United beyond the summer transfer window.
The midfielder played a solid role whenever called upon by Jose Mourinho last season and it appears that the Portuguese coach is a keen admirer of the former Tottenham man.
Now, Arsenal boss Wenger has added his praise for Carrick, admitting that he would have loved to have coached the midfielder.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website, Wenger said: “I give Michael my deepest congratulations for his testimonial. I think he deserves it hugely.
“I would say personally I’m an admirer of his career, of his quality. One of my regrets is never having had him as a player because I think he was one of the greatest players in English football.
“I believe as well that he did not always get the reward and the tribute, the recognition he deserved.
“But I’m an admirer of Michael and I wish him all the best for the future.”
Carrick will be hoping to help Manchester United challenge on four fronts next season after the Red Devils booked their return to the Champions League by winning the Europa League in Mourinho’s first season at the club.
