Alan Shearer wants to see Mesut Ozil improve his goal record against the top six if the Arsenal star is still at the Emirates Stadium next season.

The Germany international allowed his high standards to slip in the 2016-17 campaign amid uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at the north London club.

Ozil scored eight times and made nine assists in 33 appearances in the Premier League after having created 18 goals in the previous campaign as Arsenal finished in second place.

The club-record signing is thought to be demanding a contract in the region of £350,000 a week with less than 12 months remaining on his current deal with the FA Cup winners.

Speaking to BBC Sport about what Ozil needs to improve next season, former England and Newcastle United striker Shearer had a message for the World Cup winner.

“There’s no denying that he has huge ability but I just would like to see him do more in the bigger games,” Shearer said.

“One goal this season against any team that finished in the top half is not enough. He needs to do more in the big games.”

Arsenal won the FA Cup final on Saturday evening thanks to a 2-0 win against Premier League champions Chelsea.

The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
