Arsene Wenger sends message to Arsenal fans about Riyad Mahrez
Arsene Wenger has hinted that Arsenal could complete a deal to sign Riyad Mahrez in the summer transfer window
Arsene Wenger admits he is a fan of Riyad Mahrez but insists Arsenal haven’t made an offer for the Leicester City midfielder.
The Algeria international was reported to have handed in a transfer request last week after Leicester’s disappointing defence of their Premier League crown.
Mahrez scored 17 times and made 11 assists in 37 appearances in the 2015-16 season to help Leicester win the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri.
Indeed, the Algerian playmaker was voted as the PFA player of the year in 2016 thanks to his electric performances in the Foxes side.
Arsenal were linked with a move to sign Mahrez last summer but the north London side failed to complete a deal for the attacking midfielder.
The Gunners are thought to be interested in a fresh bid for the African midfielder ahead of the 2017 summer transfer window.
Speaking to beIN Sports about Mahrez, Arsenal manager Wenger spoke in glowing terms about the Leicester star.
“We have not made a bid, but personally, I like the player, yes,” Wenger told beIN Sports. “I think he made a huge impact when they won the championship.
“Like at everybody else at Leicester, this season has been more challenging, but it doesn’t take away from his qualities.”
Wenger signed a new two-year contract with Arsenal last week.
