Ian Wright sends direct message to Arsenal owner to follow Chelsea example
The Arsenal legend wants to see owner Stan Kroenke back Arsene Wenger in the summer transfer market
Ian Wright has urged Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke to hand Arsene Wenger a huge transfer budget this summer.
The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table for the first time under the French coach after Arsenal finished a point behind Liverpool in the table.
Arsenal lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League earlier this year as the north London side crashed out at the last-16 stage for the seventh successive season.
The Gunners did end the season on a high note after a 2-1 win against Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday evening.
Wenger’s current contract is set to expire in the summer, although the 67-year-old has been widely tipped to sign a two-year extension.
Former Arsenal striker Wright wants Kroenke to follow the lead of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and give the Gunners boss some significant transfer funds in the 2017 summer transfer window.
“It would be brilliant if Stan Kroenke backed Arsene Wenger,” Wright told the Sun Goals podcast.
“When I say back him, I mean give him real backing in the sense of the kind of money [to make big signings].
“People will point to Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez but that’s money Arsenal generated. I’m talking about putting money in like Roman Abramovich.”
