Pundit suggests Arsenal sign this player to replace Mesut Ozil
Stewart Robson wants Arsenal to sign Leicester City midfielder Riyad Mahrez to replace Mesut Ozil
Riyad Mahrez would be a ready-made replacement for Mesut Ozil if Arsenal’s record signing leaves the north London club this summer, according to Stewart Robson.
Arsenal still haven’t agreed a contract extension with the World Cup winner despite Ozil winning a third FA Cup in four seasons.
The latest reports suggest that Ozil wants £170,000 a week to commit his future to the north London side beyond the summer.
Mahrez, meanwhile, handed in a transfer request at 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City last week to prompt talk of a potential move to Arsenal.
The Algeria international scored 17 times and made 11 assists in their title-winning campaign to help Claudio Ranieri’s side win the Premier League against the odds.
Speaking to ESPN FC about speculation linking Mahrez with a move to Arsenal this summer, former Gunners star Robson said:
“Depends on whether Sanchez and Ozil stay,” Robson said.
“If they go, they’ll need to replace those players. Mahrez would fit that Ozil role.
“He’d do a job from the right side and he’d score more goals than Ozil. He’s a great passer of the ball.”
Ozil moved to Arsenal in a club-record £42.5m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2013.
