Martin Keown believes that Chelsea and Liverpool can both help represent English sides in the Champions League next season.

The Blues secured their spot in Europe’s elite club competition by winning the title this season, while Liverpool edged to a fourth-placed finish in Jurgen Klopp’s first full season in charge.

Chelsea will be hoping to launch an assault on the Champions League title as manager Antonio Conte looks to win the competition for the first time.

Liverpool will also be aiming to make their way out of the group stage as Klopp brings Champions League football back to Anfield.

And with Manchester United’s Europa League triumph meaning that there will be five English clubs in the Champions League next season, Arsenal legend Keown is hoping to see a better showing from the Premier League sides next term.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Keown said: “It would be embarrassing if, with five teams in the Champions League, we didn’t get at least a couple of sides in the quarter-finals.

“This season Arsenal were not at their best, Tottenham were struggling with playing at Wembley, City were inconsistent and Leicester were making their debut. There was no flag-bearer.

“Now, we have Chelsea in really good shape, City in better shape and Spurs who will be used to having Wembley as their home ground.

“Liverpool will be looking to rekindle the drama of those famous European nights at an expanded Anfield and then we have Manchester United and Mourinho, who knows how to get results in this competition. Surely one team has to get to the semis?”

Chelsea missed out on a Champions League spot last season after they finished 10th in the Premier League.
