Pat Nevin: Antonio Conte needs these signings to make Chelsea more robust
The Chelsea legend wants to see Antonio Conte reinforce his squad this summer ahead of a return to the Champions League
Pat Nevin believes Chelsea need to sign at least “a few” players to make Antonio Conte’s squad more robust ahead of a return to the Champions League.
The Italian took over the reins at Stamford Bridge back at the end of the 2015-16 season after Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table.
Conte wasted no time signing five players in the 2016 summer transfer window to help overall the Chelsea squad that the former Juventus boss inherited from Guus Hiddink.
Chelsea wracked up 30 victories in the 2016-17 season to win the Premier League title with two games to spare after a 1-0 win at West Brom sealed the top-flight trophy earlier this month.
The Blues were unable to complete the double in Conte’s first season after Chelsea lost 2-1 to bitter rivals Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday evening.
Chelsea will return to the Champions League next season as Conte looks to win the competition for the first time.
Writing in his column on Chelsea’s website, Nevin said:
“A good level of realism that we are back after a bad season and looking forward to the Champions League, a defence of our title and maybe a few new faces to make that title defence more robust.”
