Danny Mills has branded speculation that Liverpool could sign Virgil van Dijk in a £60m deal as “ridiculous”.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international in the 2017 summer transfer window despite Southampton insisting the centre-half is not for sale earlier this year.

Liverpool were thought to be on the brink of completing a club-record deal to sign the Southampton defender on Monday amid talk of the Merseyside outfit coughing up a transfer fee in the region of £60m.

Van Dijk has established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading centre-halves in recent seasons and is thought to be attracting interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, former Manchester City defender Mills believes talk of Liverpool paying a £60m transfer fee for the Dutch centre-half is ridiculous.

“He’s a great defender and if he goes to a better team training day in and day out with better players, playing alongside better players, possibly a slightly better coach as well, he will get better,” Mills told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“But £50m or £60m is ridiculous.”
