Ander Herrera says he is flattered by talk of him becoming the next Manchester United captain but insists he is not yet ready for the role.

The Spanish midfielder has earned plenty of praise for his performances for the Red Devils in recent months and was one of the top stars of Jose Mourinho’s first season at the club.

Herrera was named as the man of the match as Manchester United beat Ajax 2-0 in the Europa League final to secure their return to the Champions League for next season.

The 27-year-old midfielder is a firm favourite amongst Manchester United fans and he has been touted as a possible candidate to captain the Red Devils in the future.

However, Herrera himself feels that he is not quite ready for that role at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard told Sport360: “I am very thankful for the people who think so… but I prefer to be careful with that.

“All the United captains have won everything for the club but I haven’t done yet.

“Hopefully one day I can. But to be honest I just want to keep playing and improving.”

Manchester United are preparing for a return to the Champions League despite having finished sixth in the Premier League last term.

Herrera also helped the Red Devils win the EFL Cup in Mourinho’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.
