Graham Hunter has questioned why Manchester United would allow Real Madrid target David De Gea to leave in the summer.

The Red Devils are facing a battle to retain De Gea’s services for another season amid interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Los Blancos have been linked with a move for De Gea regularly over the past few seasons and the goalkeeper was on the brink of a transfer to Old Trafford in 2015 before a deal fell throughout on deadline day.

Mourinho has left the 25-year-old goalkeeper out of his Manchester United team for their last two games of the season, including Wednesday night’s 2-0 win against Eredivisie giants Ajax in the Europa League final.

De Gea has been touted with a £65m switch to Real Madrid as Argentina number one Sergio Romero impressed in the Spain international’s absence.

Speaking to Irish radio station Newstalk about speculation surrounding the Manchester United goalkeeper, Hunter said:

“It’s odd to me but there does seem to be momentum Jose Mourinho is willing to do that deal with Real Madrid.

“There is atmosphere created where David De Gea is more willing to do that.

“Real Madrid is willing to pay a big premium. Is it the right thing to do to take away one of the building blocks?”

Manchester United won the EFL Cup and the Europa League this season.
